The Nerja Council yesterday gave the green light to the proposal to set up a new joint venture company to manage the local water supply.
The Nerja Council yesterday approved a plan to set up a joint company to control all aspects of the municipal water supply. The motion was carried by the ruling PP junta using its absolute majority, the other parties opposing the motion.
The opposition PSOE said they were not opposed to the idea in principle but criticised the way the proposal had been handled. The IU said the move hides a privatisation of the water service and it could lead to price increases to the consumer.
The ruling PP say the move is ‘municipalisation’, not ‘privatisation’, and that similar systems work perfectly well in places like Vélez-Málaga and Fuengirola.
The document will now go on public display for 26 days and the aim is to complete the administrative formalities for the new company by the end of the year. The new company will have a board of directors consisting of 6 council members and 6 members from the chosen private company with the mayor, José Alberto Armijo. as its chairman.
