Algorrobo Costa held its first organic food market yesterday and this will now be a regular event on the first Saturday of each month.
Andalucía accounts for 60% of the area in Spain used for organic farming, yet it is one of the lowest consumers of such products. The farming cooperatives specialising in organic products, of which there are half a dozen in the Axarquia, hope to raise awareness of the benefits of organically produced foodstuffs and to encourage people to change their habits.
Currently, about 90% of local organic produce is sent abroad, mainly to northern Europe and North America, where it is far more popular and commonplace.
The market, located in the Lidl car park, will take place every first Saturday of the month from 10:00 to 14:00.
