Nerja market moves, but doesn’t take place

The Nerja market traders duly turned up yesterday at the new location in Almijara but it was chaos and the market did not go ahead in the end.

The traders began setting up their stalls at 07:00 but it all ground to a halt. According to the market traders, after the arrival of only about 50 of the 200 stallholders and their vans, the place was a logjam. They said the aisles were too narrow and the stalls were too close together, and this meant that the rest of the traders could not get in.

The Local Police apparently suggested they set up 50 at a time, which would have meant that it would take about 4 hours to complete.

The market traders, who say the site is only fit for about 140 stalls, not 200, will turn up next week but do intend to lodge an appeal in the Administrative Court against the Nerja Council. They aso intend to request a permit to hold a protest march through the streets of Nerja in order to explain to the local residents why the market didn’t take place.

One trader described the new site as being like ‘a goat corral up a mountain’.
