It is now known that six people wre injured, two of them seriously, following the collapse of a footbridge over the A-7 near Mijas.
The collapse occurred after a lorry carrying a crane hit the bridge. Several vehicles were trapped under the rubble and firefighters had to cut and dig the occupants out.
Two people are in a serious condition in hospital having suffered head and chest injuries.
The collapse of the bridge caused traffic jams of 40 kilometres and brought the area to a standstill. Traffic was diverted via the AP-7 but a delay in opening up the tolls caused a tailback there as well.
It is not the first time that this pedestrian footbridge has collapsed, a similar incident occurring five years ago.
