The Provincial Delegate for Employment, Manuel León, has acknowledged that figures relating to industrial accidents so far this year are ‘not good’.
Although the overall number of accidents in the workplace during the first six months of this year have only risen by 2.8%, there has been a significant rise in the number of serious injuries or fatalities. Eight people have died so far this year, mostly in the construction industry.
Some of the blame for the increase in the number of accidents is being put down to the fragmentation of companies into smaller units which are then not subject to the normal strict safety rules or guidelines.
The Provincial Delegate would like to see companies impress upon their employees the need for safety and to such an extent that they are not tempted to ignore the rules.
