Antonio Basagoiti has been elected president of the Partido Popular in the Basque Country with 82.3% of the valid votes cast.
At their XII Congress, the Partido Popular has elected Antonio Basagoiti as its president. In his pre-election speech, Basagoiti acknowledged that he was seen as a candidate of ‘consensus’ but said he also aims to be one for ‘unity’.
Basagoiti also reaffirmed his commitment to the principles of the Basque Partido Popular, such as freedom, the defence of Spain and the fight against terrorism. He added that ETA have no chance of achieving their objectives and the PNV, their political wing, are ‘replaceable’.
The former president of the Basque PP, María San Gil, who vacated the post recently, did not attend the Congress.
