The Nerja Council is proposing to introduce a motion at its next plenary session whereby the mayor becomes chairman of the Nerja Caves Foundation.
The proposed motion aims to amend the statutes relating to the Nerja Caves, with the mayor becoming chairman of the Nerja Caves Foundation and overall control resting with Nerja Council and not with any sub-government body.
Nerja Council currently receives revenue from the Nerja Caves Foundation amounting to 10% of ticket sales, an agreement which brought in €270,000 last year. Under the new proposal, however, the Nerja Council wants 10% of all revenues, not just from ticket sales.
If approved in the Nerja Council plenary session, which is a foregone conclusion with the ruling PP having an absolute majority, the next stage would be to include the proposal in the next plenary session of the Nerja Caves Foundation.
The current chairman of the Nerja Caves Foundation, Ángel Ramírez, who also happens to be the opposition PSOE leader, described the proposal as ‘absurd’.
There have been many problems and disputes in recent times between the Nerja Council and the Nerja Caves Foundation which have resulted in projects being delayed, a situation seen by many as being almost purely party political.
Cynics may well view such a change, if it happens, as being a question of power and a desire for more revenue…
