Twenty-eight people have been arrested in Roquetas de Mar as part of the ongoing investigation into the ‘Nigerian Lottery’ scam.
‘Operación Nilo’ is an ongoing investigation into organisations carrying out the so-called ‘Nigerian Lottery’ scam whereby letters are sent out informing people that they have won a prize. The letters informs people that, in order to collect their prize, they must deposit an amount of money into a specified bank account (duuh…).
The operation has so far led to the arrest of 219 people, 127 of whom are currently in prison and another 25 have aleady been deported to Nigeria.
So far, 562 people are known to have been victims of the fraud, netting the organisation around €10 million. Police have carried out raids on 141 properties, seizing numerous documents, 205 computers, 705 moblie phones and over €400,000 in cash.
