No weekly market in Nerja yesterday as the dispute continues for a sixth week.
The market traders once again refused to set up their stalls and took to the streets in a protest march. However, this time there was a spot of bother.
The protesters began their march from the new Almijara site to the Town Hall in the centre of town. According to several traders, as they passed the headquarters of the Local Police on avenida Pescia, the Police Chief ordered them to halt. Some of the marchers at the back continued to push forward and this resulted in one trader being forcibly detained and others receiving blows.
The detainee, who is being charged with assault, was taken to the Guardia Civil station on calle San Miguel. The protesters then sat down in the middle of the road, holding up traffic for about five minutes. After causing a huge traffic jam, they then continued their march to the Town Hall.
The meeting between the Association of Market Traders, AVAM, and the Local Council, postponed until this week, will now take place on Friday. It had originally been rescheduled for today but was once again postponed, and again at the request of the Council.
