In Spain as a whole, 18,000 motorists have either lost all their licence points or are about to lose them.
Roughly 9,000 people have already had their licences withdrawn as a result of losing all their points and another 9,000 cases are still being processed.
The points system for driving licences was introduced on July 1st 2006, being lauded as a major step forward in accident prevention. There are currently 264,000 drivers who have received notification that they have lost half of their points.
Speeding is bar far the main reason for the loss of points, followed by no safety belt or crash helmet, talking on a mobile phone whilst driving and excessive alcohol consumption.
