Tonight sees New Year celebrations, complete with the Three Kings, in Bérchules.
Yes, New Year celebrations. The residents of Bérchules will be eating the traditional grapes with the chimes of midnight and generally celebrating tonight.
This rather contrary situation arose in 1995. The weather always seemed to be on the inclement side in Bérchules and then, in 1994, a power failure prevented the chimes of the bells being heard and the residents had to munch their grapes by candlelight.
Enough was enough, and the good folk of Bérchules decided to move the celebration to the summer. There is one other town, incidentally, which has done a similar thing, that being Valoria la Buena in Valencia.
Around 8,000 people are expected to flock to Bérchules for the celebrations.
