The second Index of Prices of Origin and Destination report has just been published and shows the average difference between what is charged by the producer and what is paid by the consumer.
The report, known as IPOD, is prepared by the agricultural organisation COAG and various consumer organisations and shows that the average difference between what is paid to the producer and what the consumer pays is 441%.
Farmers are always complaining that the money they are paid is often not enough to cover their costs, but someone is making a lot of money and both the farmers and consumers who like to know who it is. They believe that the distributors, on the other hand, will not be very happy with the IPOD.
For example, if you were to buy salad ingredients from the producers you would pay around €2.75. Buy the same ingredients from the supermarket and you would pay €11.52.
The IPOD is to become a regular monthly publication and will cover 25 basic products that change according to the season.
