Crackdown on noise in Vélez-Málaga

Vélez-Málaga Council has issued the first two decrees ordering the closure of two establishments, both in the El Copo area of Torre del Mar.

The action comes in the wake of a Supreme Court decision to award compensation of €2.8 million to 18 residents in urbanisation Ipanema on the grounds of noise.

Last week, the Council set up an Anti-Noise Commission and a new municipal ordinance comes into effect in September whereby fines of up to €300,000 can be imposed for infringements of the new bylaws relating to noise pollution. The Council is, naturally, keen to avoid any more costly compensation claims.

The first two closures relate to establishments which lack the appropriate licences. A further 12 closures are expected next week for establishments which either do not have an opening licence or have structurally altered premises without the necessary permits.
