Nerja was once again without its weekly market yesterday as the street traders continue their protest against the new site in Almijara.
For the eighth week in a row, Nerja was without its weekly street market as the stand-off between the Market Traders Association (AVAM) and the Nerja Council continues.
In the meantime, a legal appeal against the move has been rejected by the courts. The judge accepted and endorsed reports from the Fire Brigade, Guardia Civil and Local Police relating to the adequacy of the site for the purpose for which it is intended, namely a street market.
The Market Traders Association has also been busy trying to find alternative sites and the head of the organisation, Juan Rojas, is expected to inform his members of progress by the end of this week.
The Subdelegación del Gobierno de Málaga , on the other hand, has been busy sending out letters to street traders informing them that they face fines of €3,000 each for participating in illegal protests during the past weeks. Juan Rojas, as the leader of the protests, faces a fine of €6,000.
The street traders protested again yesterday, this time peacefully, outside the Town Hall offices in calle Carmen.
