A spillage of diesel oil at the CEPSA refinery in San Roque, Cádiz’, affected three beaches in the area although the Junta de Andalucía described the incident as ‘minor’.
The spill occurred as diesel was being transferred from one of the storage tanks to a ship. The ‘Emergency Plan’ was activated and the task of cleaning the coast got underway.
Small amounts of diesel reached the beaches of Puente Mayorga, Guadarranque and La Colonia but the majority had been cleared away by late yesterday afternoon. There is apparently still some cleaning work to be done on La Colonia beach.
CEPSA will be required to provide an explanation as to the cause of the spillage and could face financial penalties in the event of any environmental damage.
