Real Madrid beat Valencia 4-2 in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup to lift the trophy for the eighth time in their history.
Valencia were defending a 3-2 lead from last weekend’s first leg and went further ahead when David Silva scored after half an hour. Van der Vaart (Madrid) got himself sent off shortly afterwards for a harsh foul on Mata.
Soon after the start of the second half, Van Nistelrooy equalised from the penalty spot but then he also received his marching orders following a second bookable offence. It wasn’t looking particularly rosy for Real Madrid at this point, but then goals from Ramos and substitutes De la Red and Higuaín turned the scoreline around.
Morientes scored a last-minute goal for Valencia but it wasn’t enough and Real claimed the first major trophy of the season.
