Twenty-five sub-Saharan immigrants have been rescued from their half sunken boat in the Alborán Sea although it is thought that over twice that number originally started the journey.
A small, half sunken boat was spotted by the vessel ‘Isla de los Volcanes’ as it made its regular journey between Melilla and Málaga. They were taken on board and transferred to Málaga Port where Red Cross officials were on hand to offer assistance.
According to those rescued, the boat actually set sail with more than twice that number of passengers on board and many were visibly shaken by their experience. The boat had been drifting for several days before it was spotted.
Four passengers were treated for hyperthermia and one woman, who lost her husband and three children en route, was treated for shock. The remainder appeared to be in good health.
