The latest DGT road safety ‘campaign’, carried out between August 11th and August 24th, has resulted in 33,898 drivers being denounced for speeding.
The police used an extra 264 mobile radar units in addition to the normal fixed position speed traps which enabled them to cover some 2,000 locations throughout Spain.
According to the DGT, speeding is the root cause of around 27% of fatal road accidents.
Six out of ten drivers caught speeding were cautioned at the time of the offence. In the worst case, the driver of an Audi A8 was clocked doing 226kph, that’s 106 kph above the permitted limit for that particular area. Under the new laws, that driver was detained and will face criminal proceedings for an offence against road safety by reckless driving.
Six other drivers were detained for exceeding the permitted speed limit by more than 80 kph and also face criminal charges.
