The Campo de Gibraltar has suffered one of the worst fires of the summer in Spain, with 480 hectares of land destroyed so far and necessitating the evacuation of 1,000 people from their homes.
The main focus of the fire is between Algeciras and Tarifa and it has taken over 100 firefighters to bring the blaze undr control.
According to environmentalists, this is the most serious disaster ever to hit the area. It has not only affected scrub land, but also forests of olive trees and cork oak. The area is also the stopover point for thousands of migratory birds.
