The Nerja Councillor for Tourism and spokesman for the Partido Popular, José Miguel García, has reiterated the Council standpoint on the market issue in response to various remarks made by the head of the Market Traders Association (AVAM), Juan Rojas.
The Councillor stated that there is currently only the one option for the weekly market, namely the purpose-built site in Almijara II.
The street traders had accused the Council of being economical with the truth regarding the results of efforts to acquire permission to use a private plot of land in calle Carabeo/Los Huertos, but the Councillor refuted this allegation, producing letters from representatives of the owner of the land in which they regret that they cannot accede to the request.
The same plot of land is used for the annual Nerja Feria in October, but the Councillor confirmed that the event would not be affected by this current issue as relations between the Council and the landowner remained cordial.
José Miguel García reiterated that the Council remained open to dialogue on the market issue but said that the street traders would not achieve anything by continuing their protests.
The dispute is now in its twelfth week with no sign of the matter being resolved.
