A National Police officer unknowingly drove for ten kilometres with a bomb in his car and is only alive today because the device failed to detonate.
The bomb, half a kilo of Pentrita, designed to cause a devastating effect with very little explosive material being used, was discovered during a routine check when the officer returned to the barracks in Basauri, the Basque Country.
TEDAX bomb disposal experts disarmed the device, believed to be the work of ETA.
