Most workers hired for the first phase of the upcoming strawberry planting in Huelva are to be Spanish, following an agreement between the employers and the Andalucían Employment Service.
Only around 6,000 workers will be hired from abroad, mainly from Morocco and Eastern Europe. In total, the strawberry season will provide work for roughly 85,000 people, of which 40,000 are likely to be recruited abroad.
Although the government has announced restrictions on the hiring of foreign labour, it is widely accepted that it will almost always be necessary. In Huelva, around 300 of the 1,500 unemployed agricultural workers have accepted jobs planting the strawberries.
