After years of negotiations, the Córdoba agreement in 2006 between the governments of Spain, the UK and Gibraltar saw the start of flights from the Rock to Madrid by both GB airways and Iberia. GB airways have long since permanently abandoned the route and now Iberia are to cease flights as from September 29th.
Iberia stopped its original daily schedule a year ago, but is now suspending the service altogether. The last flights will be on September 28th with Madrid-Gibraltar at 19:30 and Gibraltar-Madrid at 21:30.
Airport limitations, non-profitability and the lack of passengers are quoted as the reasons for this action.
