The old church of Santa Clara in Antequera will not now start functioning as a cultural centre until 2010.
The church, which has been closed since 1999, is being fully renovated by the Junta de Andalucía. The project began in 2006 and it was initially expected that the works would be completed in time for the international congress ‘Andalucía Barroca’ in September 2007.
They weren’t completed in time, and the congress had to be held in the iglesia del Carmen.
The final phase of the restoration works began in December 2007 and were anticipated to be completed by the end of 2008 reading for the opening of the centre in 2009. However, there have been more delays, including changes to the original project, and the centre will not now be opening until 2010.
In addition to the restoration works, the Council purchased some buildings adjacent to the church in order provide storage and other facilities for the centre. Needless to say, the project has gone well over the original bufget.
