Oil slick at El Rinconcillo

The beach at El Rinconcillo has been affected by another slick of fuel oil from the ship ‘Fedra’, one of two that ran aground in the Bay of Algeciras during the recent storms.

A 60 cm wide globule of fuel has affected a 300 metre stretch of the beach known locally as bar Botavara and workers are busy trying to clean the area. The ‘Fedra’ is no longer releasing fuel but the authorities are on alert for any scattered slicks which may still be at sea.

The second vessel which was left stranded in the bay, the ‘Tawe’, should be leaving the area within the next few days. The company Svitzer S. Wijsmuller is currently trying to remove about 150 tons of light fuel from ship’s tanks.
