The situation in Málaga regarding the plague of Red Palm Weevils, nasty little beasties who infest and destroy the lovely palm trees, is not getting any better. It is probably actually getting worse.
In the ten years between 1996 and 2006, the Junta de Andalucía had to cut down around 400 trees in the province. In just the past two years, they have had to destroy 3,000. They have spent a total of €6 million cutting down affected trees in the province, €2 million of the total relating to Málaga city itself.
In addition, there could be as many as 2,000 more trees on the waiting list for cutting.
The Junta de Andalucía has also criticised several municipalities and individuals, although without naming and shaming them, for not cooperating or doing anything to ease the situation in their localities. So much so that the Junta is even considering abandoning the carrying out of anti-beastie remedial work, a stark contrast to their attitude of just two years ago.
