The Councillor for Beaches, Jonathan Méndez, has been holding talks with the new head of the Department of Coasts, Francisco Hermoso, to discuss several local issues. On the face of it, the results appear to be positive, although only time will tell!
The Department of Coasts has accepted a Council proposal to reopen at least part of the Paseo de los Carabineros and has pledged to study it. The walkway, connecting the Balcón de Europa and Burriana beach, was closed in 2002 as a result of a series of rock slides near the Tuhillo apartments.
Méndez pointed out that although parts of the walkway need extensive work, there have been no further rock slides since that time in the section between Calahonda beach (Balcón de Europa) and Carabeo beach and reopening it would be feasible.
Hopefully they can all get their acts together as the Paseo de los Carabineros was a pleasant route from the centre to Burriana beach. Also, it would make Carabeo beach a little more accessible once more. At the moment, access is via steep steps.
Torrecilla beach was also on the agenda. The Department of Coasts plans to remodel the beach area and promenade, basically making it all one level. The area of sand will be increased and two breakwaters are to be installed to help prevent future erosion by storms, the Ministry of Environment having finally come round to the conclusion that this is the best approach to the problem.
Always worth a try…The Councillor for Beaches also appears to have slipped in a ‘while you’re at it, can you rebuild the old Torrecilla watchtower’.
The preliminary work on the El Chucho promenade has already begun and, according to the Department of Coasts, the project will be completed by Easter.
