A routine inspection of vehicles arriving in Algeiciras port from Tangier on Tuesday resulted in the detention of three people, two illegal immigrants and the driver of the vehicle.
The vehicle, a van, had two suitcases in the back, each containing a Moroccan! The driver, also a Moroccan national but resident in Barcelona, was duly charged with a crime against the rights of foreign nationals. The two illegal immigrants will be repatriated under the bilateral agreement between Spain and Morocco.
During the recent ‘Operación Paso del Estrecho’, which covered the period June 15th to September 15th, police intercepted 500 immigrants trying to cross into Spain illegally via Algeciras port. The methods used by the would-be immigrants ranged from clinging to the underside of lorries or coaches to carrying false documentation or impersonating genuine residents.
