Severiano Ballesteros will today, Friday, undergo a further operation at the La Paz hospital, his third since collapsing on October 6th. He is currently in a serious but stable condition.
Doctors operated last week, but Ballesteros needed a second operation two days later in order to relieve pressure on the brain caused by swelling.
This third operation, which will last most of the day, is to remove the remains of the tumour. Ballesteros has an oligoastrocytoma, a tumour composed of two types of brain cell and the tumour is said to be affecting nerve cells and the spinal cord, making it difficult for the surgeons to reach.
Complications during the previous operation have also resulted in a build up of fluid on the brain and surgeons will try and ease this situation.
