A freight train carrying tiles was derailed this morning just outside Moncófar in Castellón and this has caused disruption to rail services in the area.
The incident happened at 06:40 this morning. The train, pulling fifteen carriages, was heading for Nules when, for reasons as yet unknown, the locomotive came off the rails and overturned. Six of the carriages also left the tracks.
The driver, who was trapped in the locomotive and had to be freed by firefighters, suffered light injuries. The derailment has caused the suspension of rail traffic and RENFE, the rail network operators, has arranged alternative transport. The suburban lines between Valencia and Almenara and between Castellón and Burriana have not been affected.
RENFE has established a bus service between Castellón and Valencia to to complete the Valencia to Barcelona route.
An investigation into the accident is being carried out as well as an assessment of the damage caused to the tracks in the area.
