Torrox Council has taken up the idea of expropriating a somewhat controversial building next to the lighthouse.
The building has been a thorny subject for several years, causing much debate but very little actual action. The opposition PSOE even went so far as to include €400,000 in its budget for its expropriation.
The Councillor for Urbanism, José Luis Pérez, acknowledges that the building is located on land designated as ‘cultural interest’ (Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC)), has no license and that the owner has been ordered to stop any further building but is refusing to comply with the order.
Attempts to ‘seal’ the works have apparently been hampered by the fact that the owner of the property carries out his renovations on alternate days each week and at various times of day, presumably as a means of avoiding contact with the authorities.
The Councillor has agreed to study the motion for expropriation, but stressed that there is no provision for expropriations in the budget for this year.
