Yesterday’s continuous, and heavy rains caused numerous problems throughout Málaga province including being a contributory factor in the death of one motorist.
The fatal accident occurred on the A-45 near Las Pedrizas, a 25 year old man losing his life when his vehicle left the road after hitting a lorry which had overturned earlier in the day.
Several people had to be rescued after trying to cross rivers, either on foot or in vehicles, but fortunately no-one was injured in these incidents. One does have to wonder sometimes….
Thirty people working on a site in the Vega de Mijas industrial area had to be evacuated due to the flood risk posed by the nearby creek.
In the area around Plaza Los Maites in Benalmádena, firefighters and Protección Vivil officers spent hours baling water out of garages and basements. The streets in the area are at a slightly higher level than the houses, which means they tend to get flooded every time it rains.
At La Fragata restaurant at the bottom of urbanisation Maite, firefighters were busy baling water from one of the flooded rooms when the roof caught fire! It is thought that the fire was started by a short-circuit. At least they were on the spot, although that didn’t seem to prevent extensive damage to the roof!
Floods in Málaga city caused a wall to collapse in Pasaje Eriales and in calle Marcos de Obregón a large tree came crashing down. Fortunately, no-one was injured in either incident. Torremolinos also suffered from flooded garages and basements.
Road and rail traffic was also disrupted throughout the province. The rail link between Algeciras and Bobadilla was cut on several occasions near Cortes de la Frontera and Gaucín, falling rocks and trees blocking the lines.
