José Ignacio de Juana Chaos has been detained in Belfast, where he had taken up residence since his release from Prison in Spain last August.
De Juana Chaos was the subject of an international ‘search and detain’ warrant issued by the Spanish Court after he failed to appear in court to answer charges of ‘glorifying terrorism’.
José Ignacio de Juana Chaos was released from prison on August 2nd 2008 having served a mere 21 years of a 3,000 year sentence for the murders of twenty-five people as an ETA member. After leaving prison, he first went to Dublin and then on to Belfast, where he appears to have taken up residence. The ‘search and detain’ warrant was issued last Tuesday.
The ETA man made a brief appearance in court, but the hearing had to be postponed through a lack of an interpreter.
He was arrested by the Northern Irish Police in cooperation with detectives from the Extradition Unit and members of the International Mutual Assistance Unit.
