Chiclana has a new mayor

Chiclana has a new mayor following a successful censure motion brought against the incumbent, Ernesto Marín (PP).

A pact between the socialist PSOE, the left-wing IU and the PSA, resulted in a 13 to 12 vote to censure the current mayor, a vote of no confidence in other words. And that means he’s out, and the PSOE’s José María Román has taken control of the Council.

Chiclana was formerly a pretty safe PSOE seat prior to the last election when the PP ended up in control, although not with an absolute majority.

José María Román says he will usher in a new era of change and progress for the town and will carry out new plans for housing and unemployment. He does have the advantage that the Cádiz Provincial Council, the Andalucían Regional Government and Central Government are all also PSOE controlled.

Some critics, even within the Council, are claiming that the pact between the PSOE, IU and PSA is merely a means of covering up past planning ‘indiscretions’ carried out by former Socialist administrations.
