Spain, without world number one Rafael Nadal, have lifted the Davis Cup for the third time in their history, the previous occasions being in 2000 and 2004.
Fernado Verdasco beat Argentin’as José Acasuso, who was standing in for Juan Martin del Potro, in a five set thriller, 6-3 6-7 (3-7) 4-6 6-2 6-1.That put Spain 3-1 up with only one rubber to play. In the final match, David Nalbandian had expected, or at least hoped, to be playing to win the cup, but it wasn’t to be.
Argentina were bidding for their first Davis Cup victory, having been runners-up to the USA in 1981 and to Russia in 2006, especially being the home team.
