The current bad weather throughout the Iberian peninsular has claimed its first victim, a 25 year old man.
Eduardo Prieto was returning to his home in Aguera after a shopping expedition in Belmonte de Miranda when his car was buried under thirty metres of rocks and rubble following a rockslide. The incident happened at around 17:00 yesterday on the AS-227 in Belmonte de Miranda.
Elsewhere, around thirty mountain passes had to be closed due to snow, most of them on secondary roads. On the main road network, the Pajares pass is closed to heavy traffic, with cars having to use snow chains.
Asturias, Cantabria, País Vasco, Navarra, Aragón and Castilla y León remain on ‘orange alert’ for snow, with warnings that it could even fall at heights lower than 800 metres.
Much of the Galician coast is on ‘red alert’ for high winds and rough seas and most of the local vessels are confined to port.
In Castilla y Leon, snow and ice have left more than eighty students unable to attend classes and seventeen mountain passes have been closed. In Avila, wind caused a tree to fall and block the N-403, causing traffic problems.
It is also ‘orange alert’ in the Balaerics for high winds and stormy weather, with several small tornadoes having been sighted out to sea.
The bad weather, and many of the alerts, are expected to continue until Friday.
