At least 25 people, four of them children, have been injured this morning in a gas explosion in a three-storey block of apartments in calle Vicenç Bou in the Gavá district of Barcelona.
The Fire Brigade received notice of the explosion at 03:06 this morning and twenty-three units headed for the scene. When they arrived, 19 of the injured, including the four children, had already been evacuated from the building. Two of the children were transferred to the Burns Unit of the Vall d`Hebron Hospital and are said to be in a serious condition.
Firefighters had difficulty accessing the interior of the building due to the intensity of the flames. The apartment block is isolated, with four dwellings on each of the three floors. The explosion, involving natural gas, appears to have occurred on the ground floor or in the basement.
Two adjacent buildings were evacuated as a security precaution.
