Ignacio Uría Mendizábal, a 70 year old businessman from Azpeitia, Guipuzcoa, has died from gunshot wounds, the latest victim of ETA violence. He had been shot in the head and the chest.
Ignacio Uría was one of the owners of the company Altuna y Uría, which was involved in work on the AVE high-speed rail network in the Basque Country and had been threatened by ETA. In March 2007, various acts of sabotage had been carried out against the company.
Uría set off to go to his company office in avenida de Loyola around noon and, as was his habit, was stopping off at the restaurant Kiruri for a game of cards. However, on this occasion, he never made it. In the restaurant car park, a gunman fired at least two shots, wounding Uría in the head and chest.
Attempts were made to resuscitate him but they were unsuccessful.
