It is now 24 weeks without a market….so here’s a radical thought, which would not only be useful in this case, but also perhaps in other instances where there are major disputes or contentious issues between the people and the ruling municipal authority.
The Council, or any Council for that matter, is elected into office by the people of the municipality and, in theory at least, should actually be serving the interests of those people before any other interests. So why not, especially in the case of the siting of the weekly market, let the people decide via a referendum.
A referendum is a useful tool, as the Swiss can testify, and I believe there is actually one going to held in Almuñecar relating to changing or amending the PGOU (all hail and genuflect).
Even the Central Government has to listen when ‘x’ number of people sign a petition relating to a particular subject, such as recently happened with regard to the ‘Mari Luz’ case.
It will never happen of course, but it would be a nice idea to build into local government some sort of mechanism to initiate a referendum (‘x’ percentage of the population/registered voters or whatever = let the people themselves decide). And one that was binding!
