Cold weather or not, they still continue to make the even more perilous journey across the Mediterranean in small boats.
The SIVE (Sistema Integrado de Vigilancia Exterior) surveillance system detected a boat about 3.5 miles south of Paloma Baja near Tarifa. It was intercepted and found to contain 35 passengers, including four babies.
Once in Tarifa, the passengers, none of whom had thought to bring any documentation with them, were attended by the Red Cross. Although generally found to be in good health, two women and two babies were transferred to hospital suffering from exhaustion.
