A couple in their sixties have been rescued from their home near Nigüelas, Granada province, where they had been stranded since Saturday due to heavy snowfalls.
The couple live in a remote cottage which, after the recent heavy snows in the area, became completely cut off. Nearby residents contemplated a rescue on foot but this had to be abandoned as it involved a trek of around 10 kilometres through deep snow.
A helicopter rescue began on Tuesday but had to be abandoned due to adverse weather conditions. However, today was more favourable and the rescue was able to take place.
The couple, one of whom is a doctor, were in good health and had suffered no ill effects as they had sufficient provisions in their home to keep them going until rescued.
