The investigation into Social Security fraud in Granada, codenamed ‘Operación Genil’, has so far resulted in 80 arrests, four of the detainees being businessmen, one of whom has been remanded in custody.
The businessmen had set up companies which had neither employees nor commercial activity, yet claims were being submitted to the Social Security and National Employment Institute (INEM) by numerous individuals.
The value of the fraud has been put at €4.2 million. The detainees have been variously charged with fraud and forgery of documents. The investigation is still ongoing and the final number of people involved in the fraud could reach 400.
