Figures released by Estepona Council show that the number of people requesting licences for new businesses dropped by 50% during 2008 when compared to the previous year.
Falling sales in the traditional commercial sector have put a lot of people off starting up on their own.
There were 181 permits processed regarding the opening of businesses, some 77 changes of ownership, 3 changes of activity and 5 requests for expansion.
