Professional taxi drivers in Mijas are none too happy at the increase in the number of ‘pirate’ operators in the area.
Cut-price private operators, out to make a bit of extra cash, are nothing new and can be found almost everywhere, but the current economic crisis is tempting many more to ferry people to and from the airport.
There are those who do the odd ‘airport run’ to make a bit of extra cash, but there are also larger scale operators in action, often using hire cars as a means of making detection more difficult.
One pirate operator in the Mijas area has so far been arrested and the Council has been busy informing the local hotels and other establishments of the risks involved in using private, unlicensed ‘taxis’.
Apart from the actual legality regarding the carrying of passengers to and from the airport in a private vehicle, whilst it may be tempting due to the lower cost, should an accident occur en route, this would not be covered by any insurance policy.
