A report by the Ministry of Equality, based on a study of figures relating to the past decade, shows what just about everyone knows, that women are paid less than men. But by how much?
Nationally, women receive, on average, €558.40 per month less than their male counterparts. In Andalucía, the figure is €512.00. In percentage terms, we are talking of an average difference of 31.7%.
The figures do vary quite drastically depending on region, the industry involved and type of work, fluctuating between 10% and 35%.
The leader in inequality is the Basque Country, where the monthly wage difference is around €717, followed by Barcelona (€707), Cataluña (€701) and Aragon (€701). Navarra, Castilla y León and Madrid are also above the national average.
In the Canary Islands, where wages are lower anyway, the difference is only €333.
The regions of Extremadura, Baleares, Andalucía, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Comunidad Valenciana, Galicia, Murcia and La Rioja are all below the national average to varying degrees.
