The Department of Coasts is planning to initiate the ‘draft technical study’ phase of proceedings relating to the feasibility of placing submerged breakwaters along the Marbella coast to permanently resolve the problem of beach erosion during bad weather.
This first stage, which should occur before the summer, involves accepting bids to carry out the technical studies and choosing a consultant to carry out these studies.
The consultant will be required to study the current proposals, come up with several alternatives and submit a draft report for consideration.
The current proposal by Marbella Council is for a submerged sea wall, in two sections, covering five kilometres of coastline in total. One would be from the city centre to the fishing port, the other from Guadaiza to Guadalmina in San Pedro.
However, due to the complexities of the project, it is anticipated that the draft report will take ten to twelve months to complete and this will mean continuing to bring in fresh sand everytime the weather changes, as normal.
