COAG, the Coordinadora de Organizaciones de Agricultores y Ganaderos de Andalucía (Coordinator of Organizations of Farmers and Ranchers of Andalucia), has called for a strike in Jaén province to demand fair prices for olive oil.
COAG expects virtually all of the olive oil sector to support the strike call which cripple areas such as Cazorla, Alcaudete, Porcuna and Arjona.
The Unions are seeking government intervention to increase the profitability of this traditional industry which is often carried out in remote or disadvantaged areas.
Also being sought is the prohibition of mixing oils, namely olive and seed, for domestic consumption within the EU. The Agency for Olive Oil is asking for Ministerial help to develop the capacity, resources and skills necessary to perform a thorough inspection of the movement of oil within the industry.
