There has been a spate of thefts during the past couple of months in Campillos, Sierra de Yeguas and Teba in Málaga province and in Los Corrales and Martín de la Jara in Sevilla province. Amongst the items stolen have been 150 pigs.
The livestock thefts have occurred repeatedly, a few pigs at a time being taken. Some farmers have suffered multiple thefts, up to six times in some cases.
The value of the stolen piggies is put at €15,000, but the Agrarian Association of Young Farmers (ASAJA) say that selling pigs on the open market would be a difficult task due to strict sanitary requirements and quality controls which need to be met. They believe the pigs have been stolen for home consumption.
Who, if offered a cheap, but dodgy porker is going to demand a set of papers?
Meanwhile, in Antequera, thieves stripped hundreds of olive trees and made off with about 7 tons of olives.
