FACUA-Consumidores en Acción, the Consumer Protection Group, has now issued safety warnings relating to 18 brands of footwear in connection with contamination with Dimethyl fumarate.
Dimethyl fumarate is often used as a moisture inhibitor in not only footwear, but also other leather goods such as sofas. However, even in very small doses, it can produce extremely severe allergic reactions.
The brands involved are:
Pasite, Bellucci, Latinas, Clara García, Benini Shoes, Benavente, Roberto Botella, Drastik, Lalikaer, Gioseppo, WSK, ESS, Bache, Love Red, Coolway, SPWSH, Amelia Zaragoza and Maria Mare
There have been a number of reported cases of this severe allergic reaction, not only in Spain, sufferers often taking many weeks to recover. The reaction takes the form of rashes, induces severe eczema and is very difficult to treat.
Sufferers may be able to claim compenstation.
FACUA has been critical of the action, or rather ‘inaction’, of the relative Government Ministeries on this subject.
