Two police officers were patrolling along calle Gonzalo de Berceo in Huelva just after midday on Sunday when they spotted two youths acting ‘suspiciously’.
The officers asked to see identification and after the two had made it know they were brothers, one of them ran off. People in the area then began emerging from their homes and began attacking the officers with sticks, stones and baseball bats.
Reinforcements were summoned after as many as 80 people joined in the assault on the officers. The police were forced to use their batons and shots were fired in the air to try and disperse the crowd.
Five officers were injured in the disturbance, one requiring hospital treatment after receiving a severe blow to the head caused by a rock. The two brothers, along with their parents, have been arrested.
